The Spike Milligan Trophy
– 2003/2004
The All Ireland Institute of Psychiatry today
announced details of the Spike Milligan Intervarsity Public Speaking
Competition 2003\2004.
The Spike Milligan Award was established
to foster and promote communication skills among doctors in training
– particularly in the mental health field. The annual event
is also designed to recognise the work of Spike Milligan in de-stigmatising
mental illness through his appearances and writing.
A student team from each medical school on the
island is invited to participate in the competition.
Round One Heats for this year are as follows
TOPIC: ‘Keep Taking the Tabloids: Does the Media
Influence Stigma’?
TCD v QUB: Thursday, 13th November 2003
Trinity Centre for Health Sciences, St.
James’s Hospital, Dublin @ 7.00 pm
NUIG v UCD: Thursday, 13th November 2003
The Lecture Theatre, Clinical Science Institute, NUI Galway.
UCC v RCSI: Thursday, 13th November 2003
Main Lecture Theatre, UCC, Cork.
The final will be held in the Galway Bay Hotel on Wednesday 31st
March 2004. The topic for the final is – 'Stigma in Mental
Illness: Who is to blame’?
As well as receiving the Spike Milligan trophy on
behalf of their University - the two members of the winning team
will each receive 1,500 euro in prizemoney. Runners up in the final
will also receive a cash prize.
The Spike Milligan trophy is a specially commissioned
sculpture by Dick Joynt.
This competition is in association with Pfizer Neuroscience.
