Irish College of Psychiatrists raises issues on Cork Conference programme….

Cork Rape Crisis Conference – ‘Sexual Violence: The Way Forward’

Date – 22-23 April 2004 at UCC

Some of the work of the main speakers at the above conference, Bass and Davis has been the subject of controversy since the late 1980’s/1990’s. Yet this conference has not included any speakers with a divergent view of recovered memory and how it is elicited.

The Royal College of Psychiatrists guidelines - and the subsequent paper by the Psychotherapy Faculty recommend caution when counsellors and psychotherapists uncover traumas/abuse which a person has been unaware of until attending for counselling or psychotherapy. False Memory Syndrome can be induced unwittingly by inexperienced or over zealous practitioners.

Recovered memory does occur. The Irish College of Psychiatrists believes that it is important for practitioners to be made aware of the pitfalls and are aware of how their own belief systems can influence the people they are treating.
