The Spike Milligan Trophy – 2003/2004

The All Ireland Institute of Psychiatry today announced details of the Final of the Spike Milligan Intervarsity Public Speaking Competition 2003\2004.

The Spike Milligan Award was established to foster and promote communication skills among doctors in training – particularly in the mental health field. The annual event is also designed to recognise the work of Spike Milligan in de-stigmatising mental illness through his appearances and writing.

The Finalists are

The final will be held in Galway Bay Hotel on Wednesday 31st March 2004 at 6.00 pm. The topic for the final is – 'Stigma in Mental Illness: Who is to blame’?

Guest Judges are Dr Muiris Houston, Dr Jim Anderson and Dr Rachael Cullivan.

Special Guest is Mr Maurice O’Donoghue (aka Fr Dick Byrne from Father Ted), who is Chairing the event.

As well as receiving the Spike Milligan trophy on behalf of their University - the two members of the winning team will each receive 1,500 euro in prizemoney. Runners up in the final will also receive a cash prize.

The Spike Milligan trophy is a specially commissioned sculpture by Dick Joynt.

This competition is in association with Pfizer Healthcare Ireland.
