Press Statement

Launch of resource book for
Psychiatry training in Ireland

The Trainee Section of the Irish College of Psychiatrists recently launched a resource book entitled "Psychiatry Training in the Republic of Ireland- A Resource Book for Trainees" at the Irish Division Spring Meeting on the 28th March 2003. This resource book is a practical guide, providing relevant information on pursuing a career in psychiatry in Ireland. It is aimed at those currently undertaking psychiatry training and at anyone who may be considering embarking on this career path. It will also serve as a valuable resource for tutors and trainers. The role of various organisations such as the Irish College of Psychiatrists and the Irish Psychiatric Training Committee is explained. Basic and higher training in psychiatry are discussed with useful information provided on the various rotational training schemes throughout the country. A separate section is devoted to aspects of the MRCPsych examination.

Dr Leona Spelman, editor of the resource book commented at the launch that "information available on psychiatry training in Ireland has previously been quite piecemeal, which has made it difficult for those new to this speciality". She hoped that this handbook would function as a comprehensive guide on training related issues.

The resource book was produced by members of the Trainee Section of the Irish College of Psychiatrists, all currently trainees with firsthand experience and knowledge of psychiatry training in Ireland. The Trainee Section is indebted to the Irish Division of the Royal College of Psychiatrists and the Irish Psychiatry Training Committee, for jointly funding this book.

This book is now available to all members and inceptors of the Royal College of Psychiatrists. Non members can purchase the book through the administration office of the Irish College of Psychiatrists at a cost of €10. Updates and revisions to the text will be available on the member’s page of the Irish College of Psychiatrists website.
