PRESS STATEMENT
Irish College of Psychiatrists - New 'Bulletin' Launched
The Irish College of Psychiatrists recently launched a new full
colour newsletter, which will be produced and forwarded to all
500 members quarterly. The 'Bulletin' is supported by an educational
grant from Pfizer Ireland Limited.
Dr. Brendan Cassidy, editor of the Bulletin and Hon. Sec. of
the College, speaking at the launch said, "As part of our
ongoing efforts to achieve greater communications with members
and reinforce the identity of the Irish College of Psychiatrists,
we have developed this full colour production. The Bulletin will
be used to inform members on a range of issues and all allow them
a platform to raise issues or generate debate."
The first edition dealt with Research, Old Age Psychiatry, Adult
Psychiatry, CPD, Training, Learning Disability and Psychotherapy.
The Bulletin also included details on the Annual Spike Milligan
Public Speaking Competition. This competition was established
to foster and promote communication skills among doctors in training
- particularly in the area of mental health. The Final will be
held on 20th of March 2003 in Dublin, and will see teams from
University College Cork, Queens University Belfast and the Royal
College of Surgeons, compete for the Spike Milligan Trophy and
substantial prize money.
In the first edition of the Bulletin Dr. Colette Halpin said,
"We are all working in a climate of high expectations, limited
resources and new challenges arising from Competence Assurance
Structures, the Mental Health Act and Health Strategy.
.
In this climate, I feel we need a strong voice for Irish Psychiatry,
and I am confident that the Irish College of Psychiatrists can
provide that single platform into the future. I would strongly
encourage members to participate in the College's committees and
activities where at all possible."
