PRESS STATEMENT
Irish Section is renamed 'The Irish College of Psychiatrists'
The Irish Section of the Royal College of Psychiatrists today
confirmed that their official designation is the 'The Irish College
of Psychiatrists' - with effect from 4th October 2002. This change
of title was accepted by the Royal College of Psychiatrists in
London in June this year and has now been registered in the Companies
Office.
When the Irish Section conducted research on a range of issues
affecting psychiatrists last year - The Irish College of Psychiatrists
was selected as the preferred title by the vast majority of respondents.
The change of title represents an ongoing process, which will
create greater autonomy for the psychiatric body in the Republic
of Ireland and an increased focus on service issues in the region.
Dr. Colette Halpin, Chairperson of the Irish Section said today,
"This change of title is important as it represents the view
of members. We will be retaining our links with the Royal College
of Psychiatrists in London, which is the preferred option of the
vast majority of our members - and our research also confirmed
this. This new title along with our enhanced structure will be
very beneficial to us in focusing on specific issues affecting
Irish Psychiatrists and Psychiatry as we move forward. The Irish
College of Psychiatrists will represent close to 500 Psychiatrists
in all specialities on a range of issues within the psychiatric
service"
There are many challenges ahead not least of which is continued
funding to support the many new initiatives proposed in psychiatry.
The Irish College will continue to monitor progress and do everything
possible to advocate that the additional posts required at both
training and consultant level are approved and filled.
